Character Technical Artist

San Francisco, CA or Remote

nWay is looking for a Character Technical Artist who can help develop the tools and rigs used to create our creatures and characters across our studio’s portfolio. The focus will be on rigging characters, props, weapons, and accessories with some additional time spent problem-solving technical issues with the art/animation/engineering teams to create assets that bring our games to life.

The ideal person has a passion for making games, building rigs, and can work with a team and also manage themselves independently.

Job Responsibilities

Skin and create rigs/systems for characters, creatures, props, weapons, and accessories.
Support the modeling, animation, and design teams to make sure the rigs meet the proper requirements for gameplay functionality and visual aesthetics.
Documenting the process and pipeline to easily communicate information with team members both internal and external.
Oversee and critique the outsourcing of rig assets.
Export assets and work directly with designers, modelers, and animators to solve issues, and finalize art assets going into the game.

Requirements

Experience rigging/skinning in Maya.
Experience with game development in Unity.
Understanding the relationship between animation and rigs.
Has the initiative to investigate and come up with new and better systems that will benefit the production pipeline.
Experience working with outsourcing and documenting technical specifications for outsourcing is a plus.
Experience with armor sets, skins, and other rigged components for characters is a plus.
Python and Mel scripting knowledge is also a plus.
Strong understanding of anatomy for bone placement and proper deformation.

Pluses

Understanding of Unity.
Passion for fighting games and RPG game systems.
